Jocelyn Marie

I am a multidisciplinary artist and writer passionate about creative expression. I earned my Bachelor of Arts at The Ohio State University, where I learned many art forms and I have carried that range of experimentation into everything I have made since. My work is rooted in curiosity and emotional depth, and I use both paint and written language to explore my own inner world. I am committed to making work that leaves a meaningful impact through genuine self-reflection and discovery, both my own and that of the people who stand in front of it.

Artist Statement

I am an artist who uses a combination of language and painting to tell stories of love, loss, and the exploration of my personal womanhood. I imbue my own experiences into my work and I harness and capture those memories onto the canvas. I closely navigate the relationship between the written word and the abstraction of feelings that language evokes. Storytelling is a large inspiration for me and my work, but not storytelling as we know it, rather the power I impress onto the canvas. Can energy be detected within a body of work? How does that energy shape the artist and the viewer? These are concepts that I navigate and also scrutinize when I am creating my art.
My work gravitates towards the intensities of my womanhood. It is not soft pink, but a loud magenta: saturated, unapologetic, and impossible to ignore. Femininity is so often expected to be quiet and gentle, but the womanhood I paint is fierce, tender, angry, and sensual all at once. I move between abstraction and realism, drawn to intense hues and contrast, and I incorporate written language to push my narrative. Music guides my hand across the canvas, and the anger, passion, or sadness I feel becomes layered language. I use the canvas as a journal, writing my frustrations and most tender thoughts over themselves until they are barely legible, inviting viewers to search for words or feelings that resonate with them. The harshness or softness of my pen line reveals the emotion behind it, and the language also shades the work like cross-hatching, building depth both visually and emotionally. I then paint an image to accompany the writing, often abstract forms or exaggerated depictions of the female body, erotic or soft, expressing who I am as a woman.
My goal is to be revealing and candid about the deepness inside a woman. To show that anger is allowed, poetry is a power, and there is confidence in being vulnerable. My work exhibits what it means to grow and change in today's society and how to navigate intense feelings without shame. There is a big reflection of my muchness and my confidence in my practice, and my art shows that it is a beautiful thing to live one's life loudly and unapologetically, with no hesitations. My creation is not linear. There are times when I have more to say than there is room on the canvas, and there are times where I struggle to speak. I aim to be real and someone that is true. Being authentic is at the forefront of who I am and what I do. My art is determined and will continue to express themes of resilience and body, in all its forms.
